Create Animated Videos To Explain Programming
Code Chautari is an after-school program for public schools in Nepal with a series of connected classes on Computer Literacy and Computer Programming. It aims to develop computer skills, build computational thinking and problem solving skills.
We run a one year course where students learn basic computer skills and then transition to understanding basic concepts of computer programming using Scratch and Python. Currently, we do only in-person classes only where a facilitator/teacher is present. To increase impact, we want to develop online materials so that other kids who aren’t participating in our classes can also learn something about computers, technology, computer tools, programming, etc.
Since we work with middle school students (12-15 years old), we want to start with some fun animated videos mostly around two topics viz Computers and Computer Programming. Though these videos are targeted towards kids of 12-15 age group, they can be equally useful for teachers of the schools and adults looking to learn about computer programming.
Based on the contents provided, the person will make animated videos that will help kids understand computers, algorithms and computer programming in a very fun, child-friendly way without digging too deep into technical details. It is preferred if videos are relatable to the kids in a real life experience.
The person can have creative freedom in developing the videos while keeping them consistent with the objectives and keeping them safe, child-friendly and inclusive.
With this volunteering project, you will get opportunities to:
- Make an impact on Nepali kid's futures.
- Use your animating, video making skills for a more educational purpose.
- Interact with students of public schools in Nepal virtually (if necessary).
- Better understand the educational challenges and opportunities in Nepal’s public schools related to Computer Science.
Animated videos
- Short videos (not more than 5 minutes); one for each topic/subtopic as required
- There shouldn’t be too many concepts explained in one video; one or two is preferred.
- The videos will be uploaded to YouTube and so the format should be as per required.
- Each video will be in two languages - English and Nepali; texts and voice overs. Translations in Nepali language will be provided by the Code Chautari team.
- The number of videos to be submitted isn’t fixed as of yet. It shall be fixed after discussion with the team based on contents.
Documentation
- Write a piece (blog or article) about the experiences while developing videos during this project
The person will be provided with contents (written texts, possible images, scripts etc.) for the videos. The contents will broadly cover two ideas.
- Ideas/concepts around computers and technology that are important for a kid to learn in the modern information and digital age. This could be something like - “What are computers? What are the core parts of computers and their usage? How do computers work? What is the use of a binary language in computers?” etc.
- Algorithms and Programming concepts : Events, variables, loops, functions, conditions, arithmetic operators, logical operators, etc.
- Discussion with the students, teachers from a public school if required.
- Support in understanding contents from the Code Chautari team.
- Nepali translations of texts and voice overs.
- Our current curriculum if required.
