ThanksGiver Schweiz expansion to 11 food banks
Founded in 2019 by Laura Rosso as a non-profit charity, ThanksGiver Schweiz began as a single food bank in Birsfelden, Baselland. Today, it has grown into a vibrant network of more than 11 food banks, sustained by the passion and commitment of over 150 volunteers.
In Switzerland, a third of the food we produce – more than 2.8 million tons – is wasted, which equals 330 kg of food waste per person per year. This food waste is not only an unnecessary waste of resources it has also far-reaching effects on the environment and climate. At the same time more than 8.7% of the Swiss population lives in poverty.
Through a network of weekly food banks, ThanksGiver Schweiz turns food excess in food access by providing high-quality and nutritious surplus food items to low-income individuals and families.
A significant challenge we observe in our society is food waste on one hand and on the other hand the access to food items for individuals with limited means. Addressing these two interconnected issues could greatly enhance social equity and sustainability.
We collaborate closely with our valued partners to ensure the consistent and efficient operation of these six food banks. Our ambitious goal is to increase this number to 11 by the end of Q1 2025. This planned expansion will enable us to support additional 2,000 individuals on a weekly basis, greatly enhancing our community impact.

Turning excess into access
We recognize that the challenges of food insecurity and environmental sustainability are deeply interconnected.
Nourishing our communities nationwide
We aim to become a sustainability action hub that spans the nation. Enabling a circular food economy that benefits both communities and the environment by addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable practices within Swiss communities.
