Code Chautari is an after-school program for public schools in Nepal with a series of connected classes on Computer Literacy and Computer Programming. It aims to develop computer skills, build computational thinking and problem solving skills.

We run a one year course where students learn basic computer skills and then transition to understanding basic concepts of computer programming using Scratch and Python. Currently, we do only in-person classes only where a facilitator/teacher is present. To increase impact, we want to develop online materials so that other kids who aren’t participating in our classes can also learn something about computers, technology, computer tools, programming, etc.

Since we work with middle school students (12-15 years old), we want to start with some fun animated videos mostly around two topics: Computers and Computer Programming. Though these videos are targeted towards kids of 12-15 age group, they can be equally useful for teachers of the schools and adults looking to learn about computer programming.

For this project, the person will create contents regarding Computers and Computer Programming that will later be developed into animated tutorial or explanatory videos.

Firstly, the content developer will research ideas/concepts around computers and technology that are important for a kid to learn in the modern information and digital age. This could be something like - “What are computers? What are the core parts of computers and their usage? How do computers work? What is the use of a binary language in computers?” etc. The volunteer is free to ideate subtopics as they feel suited and coordinate with the Code Chautari team for feedback.

Secondly, the content developer will research a fun, child-friendly way to explain Algorithms and Programming concepts ( Events, variables, loops, functions, conditions, arithmetic operators, logical operators, etc.) without the use of any particular programming language.

The person can have creative freedom in creating the contents while keeping them consistent with the objectives and keeping it safe, child-friendly and inclusive.

With this volunteering project, you will get opportunities to:

  • Make an impact on Nepali kid's futures.
  • Develop your content design skills.
  • Deepen your knowledge on computers and programming.
  • Use your knowledge to help others learn.
  • Interact with students of public schools in Nepal virtually (if necessary).
  • Better understand the educational challenges and opportunities in Nepal’s public schools related to Computer Science.

1. Contents for the videos

  • For each concept, there should be a clear detailed description of what needs to be presented in the video,a storyboard of how ideas can be presented, what kind of images can be used and references if necessary.
  • Broad topics might need to be broken down into many subtopics, if necessary .
  • The content developer must  design contents in such a way that each content can fit into an animated video of less than 5 minutes.
  • Contents must be developed in English language.

2.Documentation

  • Write a piece (blog or article) about the experiences while developing contents/videos during this project

  • Discussion with the students, teachers from a public school if required.
  • Support in developing contents from the Code Chautari team.
  • Our current curriculum if required.
  • Access to our tutorial videos on Scratch programming.

Code Chautari

Every child deserves to code and bring their imagination to life.

Our mission has five main pillars.

Computer Literacy

Make kids computer literate so that they can use digital tools and the internet to build other skills and knowledge required for higher studies or future career.

Computational Thinking

Develop computational thinking ideas ( Decomposition, Pattern Recognition, Abstraction and Algorithmic Design ) and problem solving skills through programming/coding as a tool.

Self-Directed Learning

Develop 'self-directed learning' mindset and researching skills. Build habits of using digital tools to strengthen and broaden knowledge in any topic or subject.

Career

Provide exposure to the kids about programming so that they can experience it first-hand and decide for themselves if they see it as a subject/career they want to pursue in the future.

4C's of 21st Century Learning Skills

Develop the four C’s - Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration in students' mental processes required to adapt and improve upon a modern work/study environment
