NaturAktiv Ausserberg, Upper Valais
About the event
The flora and fauna, as well as the surprisingly Mediterranean character of the landscape in Ausserberg, are unique. The area is characterized by beautiful dry meadows, which are very small-scale and varied, making them some of the most species-rich habitats in Switzerland. However, because these low-yield locations are being farmed less and less, the dry
sites are at risk of becoming overgrown, which will lead to a loss of biodiversity.
The environmental project focuses on preserving these dry meadows. This also includes maintaining the pastures, as grazing animals are essential for keeping the areas open.
The work includes, for example, building a wolf-proof fence, clearing scrub from the dry meadows, maintaining hedges and forest edges, building stone and branch piles, and controlling invasive neophytes.
