Leatherworking and Skills Training Program

  • Über die Initiativen
  • UN SDGs
  • Über die Gemeinnützigkeit

Hands-on skills training serving 40 participants aged 9+ through leatherworking instruction 2-3 days per week. Led by education staff Adi, youth learn to design and craft leather goods (wallets, bracelets, keychains, bags) and sell their products at the annual Târg de Cr?ciun (Christmas Market), keeping 100% of their earnings.

Youth in Valea Jiului have limited exposure to skilled trades or entrepreneurship, with few pathways visible between education and economic opportunity. The post-communist context and generational poverty create "learned helplessness" - youth struggle to see connection between their effort and future outcomes. They lack experience with earning through skilled work (versus unskilled labor or charity), have minimal understanding of business concepts, and need concrete experiences of economic agency to develop aspiration. Without practical skills training, youth face limited employment options beyond unstable, low-wage work.

Leatherworking teaches precision handwork, attention to detail, planning, patience, and quality standards - all transferable vocational skills. The complete production process (design ? material preparation ? construction ? finishing ? marketing) provides comprehensive understanding of creating value. The Christmas Market creates authentic entrepreneurial experience where youth interact with customers, price their work, make sales, and manage earnings. Youth keep 100% of earnings, experiencing dignity of compensation for skilled work rather than charity. This builds economic agency ("I can create value"), connects effort to reward, and demonstrates that skill development leads to economic opportunity. Staff intentionally connect these lessons to career possibilities and the value of staying in school to develop marketable abilities.

VISION

A Jiu Valley where poverty no longer limits potential, and every young person has the support, skills, and opportunities to build a life of dignity and purpose.

VALUES

1. DIGNITY

Every young person has inherent worth and deserves respect, regardless of economic circumstances. We reject deficit-based approaches and build on strengths.

2. EXCELLENCE

We are committed to high-quality programming with qualified staff, evidence-based practices, and continuous improvement. Youth deserve our best.

Youth are active participants, not passive recipients. We cultivate voice, agency, and leadership. Young people set goals, make decisions, and take ownership of their growth.

4. COMMUNITY

We work in partnership with families, schools, and stakeholders. We are deeply rooted in the communities we serve and committed to long-term relationship-building.

5. HOPE

We believe in transformation and possibility. Even in challenging circumstances, youth can learn, grow, and build positive futures. We inspire and sustain hope.

6. INTEGRITY

We operate with honesty, transparency, and accountability. We keep our commitments to youth, families, and funders. We admit mistakes and learn from them.
