NaturAktiv Unterengadin, Tarasp
About the event
Few castle complexes in Switzerland dominate their surrounding landscape as impressively as the imposing Tarasp Castle. Built atop a 100-meter-high rock, this fortress has overlooked the hamlets at the base of the castle hill—likely since the 11th century.
The traditional cultural landscape surrounding Tarasp is characterized by valuable dry meadows, hedgerows, and golden-hued larch forests in autumn. Particularly beautiful is the moorland lake Lai Nair. This richly structured and biodiverse landscape is a habitat for many endangered species.
The beautiful dry meadows and pastures in Tarasp rank among the most species-rich habitats in Switzerland. Maintaining their delicate ecological balance requires the continuation of traditional, extensive farming practices, which have been practiced for centuries. However, as these less profitable areas are increasingly left uncultivated, they are becoming overgrown, leading to a significant loss of biodiversity.
The focus of the WWF NaturAktiv project in Tarasp is the care and maintenance of a nationally significant flat moor or, depending on weather conditions, a dry pasture. During the day, participants will become familiar with agricultural fieldwork, gain deeper insights into ecological relationships, enhance vital habitats for endangered species, and contribute meaningfully to the preservation of this precious cultural landscape.
