Working together, learning from each other

For asylum seekers it is very difficult to find a job in Switzerland. "I received one negative response after another", tells me the 26 years old Hyscent from Cameroon. "They told me that I did good work, but that it will be difficult my residence permit." For young asylum seekers the situation is difficult because there exist ever fewer opportunities for them. After a long search, Hyscent finally found a job at the Exportwerkstatt from Velafrica in Liebefeld, Bern.

Hyscent is completing an apprenticeship there since August 2019. His work is an important part in the whole value chain of Velafrica: Hyscent helps to repair bicycles, provides spare parts for the repair of those in Africa and works with volunteers in the export workshop. This enables the vocational training of future bicycle mechanics in our partner organizations and a sustainable bicycle mobility in Africa.

Hyscent is our second official apprentice in the export workshop. His apprentice wage of 900 swiss francs each month can’t be covered through the work on the export bicycles. This is why Velafrica is looking for supporters to help raise money for his important work.

Velafrica (Sinnovativ)

Using bikes to make a difference. The combination of integration work in Switzerland and development cooperation in Africa makes Velafrica unique. Since 1993, we have been collecting discarded bicycles, refurbishing them in social facilities, and exporting them to partner organizations in Africa. In 2021 alone, with the help of 35 partner workshops in Switzerland, we loaded 54 containers with 24,600 functional bicycles destined for Africa.

Fundraiser updates

We made it, time to say thank you!

Thank you very much for supporting Hyscent and Velafrica. Your donation is a valuable sign and an incentive for us to offer young people with a migration background a perspective.
Hyscent's history is not an isolated case. The young man from Cameroon has integrated well, speaks fluent German and is highly motivated. But the job search remains a long road for Hyscent. Many employers shy away from hiring people with N permits, as their residence status is associated with great uncertainty. The preliminary apprenticeship with Velafrica increases his chances of finding an apprenticeship or a job afterwards despite his N permit.
All this would not be possible without your support. With your donation on Copalana you help Velafrica to cover Hyscent's salary. His valuable work and the accompanying coaching cannot be covered by the work on the export bikes.
Your support encourages us and spurs us on, thank you very much.

All dies wäre nicht möglich ohne Ihre Unterstützung.
