Host family advisor
AFS is the largest global non-profit organization for cultural exchange and has 60 years of experience. Every year, young people from all over the world spend a school year in Switzerland, living with a host family and ultimately contributing to intercultural understanding and peace promotion through their experiences and contacts.
You will be the contact person for host families in case of difficulties that may arise from misunderstandings, lack of communication, and cultural differences, but you will also be someone they can talk to in good times. This will require approximately 2-4 hours of your time per month.
To fulfill this role, you need professional or personal experience in the educational, social, or intercultural field, as well as English language skills (knowledge of other foreign languages is an advantage), internet access, a minimum age of 25, and, of course, the motivation to take on this special challenge.
You will receive comprehensive training from AFS, support in all your tasks, and regular training sessions. Everyone who volunteers for AFS is entitled to the DOSSIER FREIWILLIG ENGAGIERT (Volunteer Commitment Dossier).

- Home interview with the host family (personal visit to newly registered host families to clarify suitability, expectations, questions, and uncertainties of the families)
- Writing the home interview report according to the template
- First meeting with host family and exchange student within the first two weeks after arrival
- Monthly contact with host families and documentation in the AFS database
- Advising families on questions and problems. If necessary, personal discussions, individually or with all parties involved
- Collaboration with Hosting Support at the AFS office (reporting problems and agreeing on a course of action)
- Attending AFS events (e.g., host family meetings)
- Final meeting shortly before or after the end of the exchange
Arbeitsort: Gastfamilienberater*innen arbeiten meist von zu Hause und stehen mit den Gastfamilien und der Ansprechperson im AFS Büro in Kontakt. Gelegentlich sind Besuche der Gastfamilien an ihrem jeweiligen Wohnort nötig, einerseits für die Vorbereitung der Familie vor dem Austausch, aber auch bei Problemen während dem Austausch.
Organisatorische Einbindung: Gastfamilienberater*innen sind ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter/innen von AFS Schweiz und identifizieren sich mit den Werten von AFS. Gastfamilienberater*innen sind direkt der/dem Hosting Support im AFS Büro unterstellt.
