The research project’s goals are focused on the history of Madison Square Park’s built environment such as the Eternal Light Flagstaff.  Volunteers would research the buildings and structures that not only stand today, but also those that once stood in the Park over the last two and a half centuries.

The Eternal Light Flagstaff is a WW1 monument on the western edge of Madison Square Park erected shortly after the armistice. This research document will serve to ground the public and the Park’s communities in historical context. The public will learn more about the Park and future artists can utilize this document to bring the Park’s history to light.

The volunteer would draft a document on the history of the Park’s built environment, complete with photos (where possible) and proper citations.

Madison Square Park Conservancy would eventually include information on our website and also prior research documents on the Park’s current monuments, which should be added to the document.

The main point of contact will be Truth Murray-Cole, Curatorial Manager at Madison Square Park Conservancy. Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator, and Truth Murray-Cole will initially meet with the volunteer to describe the goals of the project.

The volunteer may contact Truth with any further questions, concerns, and requests.
