About the event

Since 2016, Save the Children has been providing professional support and guidance to asylum shelters in all regions of Switzerland on the topics of childcare, support, and protection. This includes setting up child-friendly spaces in asylum shelters, providing support to refugee parents through center staff, and generally strengthening the rights of refugee children. These shelters often lack space and free rooms for child-friendly activities. In these cases, the mobile learning and play cart developed by the project experts is used. It offers a variety of opportunities for child-friendly activities in asylum shelters. As a team, you will assemble several carts on this volunteer day based on a presentation session and instructions.

  • Learning and play cart

Assembling one or more mobile learning and play carts is a great way to directly help children in Switzerland and build something as a team. Your team will receive detailed instructions on how to assemble such a cart, what products it must contain, and where to buy them.

The total cost of all the materials needed is around CHF 700-800 to provide children in asylum shelters with a mix of learning materials such as paper and pens, as well as play and craft materials. Employees can purchase the products themselves using the instructions and will be reimbursed by their employer.

Program

1

The group will meet at 9 a.m. in the Save the Children office.

  • The day begins with a welcome at the Save the Children office. A meeting room has been booked for the activity. At the start, all participants are given an insight into the work of Save the Children in Switzerland and how the joint activity can support refugee children.
  • Instructions and shopping lists for the products are then distributed, and the teams can divide into groups (depending on the number of participants) and organize all the necessary items in the various stores. It is recommended that one or two participants travel by car. The teams can either have lunch on the way or deposit all their purchases at the office and then eat at the office or in the surrounding area.

2

Lunch (individual)

  • Groups can organize their lunch breaks independently.

3

Compile

  • Once all items have been purchased, the products can be organized according to the instructions and stored in the learning and play cart. This cart will later be handed over by the Save the Children project team during a workshop.

4

farewell

  • At the end, everyone comes together again to conclude the activity. Of course, all participants have another opportunity to ask questions or give feedback.
  • This daily schedule is only a suggestion. The actual schedule will of course depend on where employees need to go to buy the items. The team can organize their time flexibly. Save the Children employees are available in the office or by phone throughout the day should any questions arise.
