NaturAktiv Cavallini Winery
About the event
Cantina Cavallini, a small company based in Cabbio, was founded in 1995 and cultivates 3 hectares of vineyards in Pedrinate, Morbio Inf., Castel San Pietro, and Vacallo, some of which have been certified organic by the Swiss government since 2000. Over the years, Cantina Cavallini has put various principles of biodynamics and the use of EM (effective microorganisms) into practice. No weeding, no mineral fertilizers, and the progressive elimination of synthetic pesticides characterize the company's agricultural management. The viticultural orientation favors the cultivation of resistant interspecific vines (Chambourcin, Souvignier gris) and the production of wines under the Vinatura, DOC, and Heroic Viticulture labels. Luciano and Grazia Cavallini take care of all the company's activities. They have renovated the old stone farmhouse to turn it into a typical and functional cellar where all the work is still carried out using traditional methods. From bottling to labeling, everything is done completely by hand. The WWF supports the cooperative as part of the "Nature Connects" project, a project to improve the diversity and connectivity of natural habitats in agriculture by providing financial support for concrete measures on the ground to increase the diversity of habitats on cultivated land and create or improve the quality of biological corridors, in line with the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy.
The activities take place on two vineyards with high biodiversity. Trees and shrubs have been planted, a pond has been built, and there are several springs. Activities include protecting trees from ungulates and other wildlife, as well as replacing and constructing posts. Other tasks include eliminating invasive neophytes listed on the federal government's "black list," cleaning up the forest, restoring natural springs, completing the construction of a pond, and building a pergola.
