Maintenance Work at the Alpine Garden La Thomasia, Pont de Nant
About the event
La Thomasia is a botanical garden dedicated to the study and conservation of mountain plants. Located at an altitude of 1,260 meters, it lies beneath the spectacular western face of the Grand Muveran, which towers 800 meters above it. Situated at the entrance of the Pont de Nant Valley, a nature reserve, La Thomasia was founded in 1891 by the Thomas family and has been continuously cultivated ever since.
The botanical garden houses nearly 3,000 mountain plant species, arranged according to their geographical origin. Alpine flowers grow alongside those from the Himalayas, the Rocky Mountains, the Caucasus, the Andes, Japan, New Zealand's mountains, the Moroccan Atlas, and Arctic regions.
The organization Alpes Vivantes is actively engaged in concrete conservation efforts in the Vaud Alps. By participating in this hands-on field day, you will have the opportunity to experience the daily realities of managing a mountain botanical garden, deepen your knowledge of alpine flora, understand the value of critical habitats for endangered species, and make a significant contribution to preserving the natural resources of the Vaud Alps.
