Pickaxe Action Against Invasive Trees in the Alpes Vaudoises
About the event
Join us for a day of ecological restoration in the beautiful Alpes Vaudoises. As volunteers, you will use pickaxes to remove invasive plant species, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity.
The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), originally from China, was introduced in Europe in the 18th century as an ornamental tree. Endowed with a fast growth and ability to multiply by suckering (shoots coming from the roots), it is very competitive and has spread rapidly in nature. In Switzerland, it replaces local native flora and is considered an invasive plant.
Plants like the Tree of Heaven threaten the balance of critical native ecosystems, and your efforts will play a vital role in maintaining the health and diversity of this scenic region. This is an opportunity to engage directly in environmental conservation while enjoying the fresh mountain air and stunning surroundings.
During the day, you will also participate in informative sessions about the impact of neophyte plants on native habitats. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of ecological challenges and the satisfaction of actively contributing to their solutions.
